RefreshFinasteride is used to treat men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia. BPH is caused by an enlarged prostate. Men with BPH usually have difficulty urinating, a decreased flow of urination, hesitation at the beginning of urination, and a need to get up at night to urinate. Finasteride will make these symptoms less severe and reduce the chance that prostate surgery will be needed. It may be used alone or in combination with other medicines such as an alpha-blocker to treat BPH. For men with hair loss, finasteride will increase the number of scalp hairs but will not increase the amount of body hair.
Finasteride blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme changes testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow or hair loss in males. It will increase testosterone levels in the body, which decreases prostate size and increases hair growth on the scalp. The effect of finasteride on the prostate and scalp will only last as long as the medicine is taken. When it is stopped, the prostate begins to grow again and the hair will be lost.

Share Share Share Shareaterstock.In adult men, Proscar is used to decrease an enlarged prostate (also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH). It can be used alone or in combination with other medications to alleviate BPH symptoms and possibly avoid surgery. Proscar (Finasteride) may help with BPH symptoms by reducing the need to urinate, improving urine flow with less straining, reducing the sense that the bladder isn't empty, and reducing overnight urination.
This medication works by lowering the quantity of DHT, a natural body hormone that drives prostate growth. Proscar isn't approved for prostate cancer prevention. It may raise the risk of acquiring a very dangerous form of prostate cancer by a small amount.
Keep a list of everything you use (including prescription and non-prescription pharmaceuticals, as well as herbal products) and discuss it with your doctor and pharmacist. Without your doctor's permission, do not begin, stop, or modify the dosage of any medications. The findings of a blood test used to identify prostate cancer may be influenced by this medicine (prostatic-specific antigen or PSA levels).

The most common side effects of Proscar include a decreased interest in sexual intercourse, inability to have or keep an erection, or a loss in sexual ability, desire, drive or performance. Talk to your doctor or a healthcare professional if symptoms persist or are severe.

While rare, these symptoms require immediate medical attention. This is not a complete list of side effects associated with finasteride. Studies have shown that finasteride can increase your risk of developing breast cancer or high-grade prostate cancer, which spreads and grows more rapidly than other types of prostate cancer.
Studies have also shown that Proscar can affect the results of the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test, which may be used to detect prostate cancer. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider that you are taking finasteride so that they are aware of any medication interference with PSA testing.
Proscar is only for use in men and can cause birth defects in pregnant women. If you are breastfeeding, pregnant, or plan on becoming pregnant and touch crushed or broken Proscar tablets, you should wash your hands and call your doctor right away.
Side Effects of Proscar (Finasteride)Finasteride is a prescription-only medication designed to treat hair loss and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It works by blocking the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase which works to shrink the prostate in men with enlarged prostate. This process helps remove excess water and other electrolytes from the body, thereby reducing symptoms of hair loss.
Finasteride tablets typically start working within 30 to 60 minutes after taking the full prescribed amount, so it is crucial to have an adequate period of hair loss during treatment. These tablets are also available in a tablet form, which makes them easier to swallow and more consistent than other hair loss medications.
Finasteride tablets are only suitable for adult men with male pattern hair loss. They are not recommended for women or children. Your doctor may prescribe Finasteride for other medical conditions.
Finasteride tablets are usually taken by mouth with a meal. Your doctor may adjust the dosage if needed. Take Finasteride tablets with a glass of water as directed by your doctor. Do not take more than once daily.

For Pfizer Inc., the world’s largest drugmaker, the drugmakers’ patents for its generic equivalents are still valid.
While patents on branded drugs have expired, the patents on the same generic equivalents, called Proscar, have not.
A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that the generic versions of Proscar and Proscar X (the new version of the drug called Finasteride) could save the U. S. Food and Drug Administration about $2 billion a year. This is an increase of about 2 percent annually from 2010.
The researchers found that the generic versions of the drug’s brand-name version of Proscar cost the same as the brand-name version of the drug’s generic version of finasteride. They also found that the same drug’s generic version of finasteride costs the same as the brand-name version of the drug.
“This is a great example of the long-term benefits of generics. They have been used for decades to treat a range of medical conditions, and we believe that the long-term costs associated with these generic drugs are very low,” Schaeffer, who led the study, told The Wall Street Journal.
But there are risks associated with the use of generic drugs. Generic drugs have a higher chance of side effects than the brand-name drugs. They can lower blood pressure and lower a woman’s prostate gland. And some medications can lower the effectiveness of the FDA’s drug approval process.
Schaeffer and his co-authors, who were not involved in the study, said they did not know about the findings of the study. But they said the study provides valuable information about the long-term safety of these drugs.
“These data may be useful in the development of new drugs with lower drug safety profiles, but they will not provide a comprehensive answer to the questions raised by the researchers about generic drugs,” said co-author Dr. Andrew J. Healy, professor of clinical and experimental pharmacology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
The JAMA study was funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which is part of the FDA. The study was also led by Merck & Co. Inc. and the company’s drug division, Merck Research Laboratories, which made finasteride and Proscar.
Merck has the drug patents on its own in South Africa, Canada, India, Brazil, Turkey, Argentina, and Portugal.
In 2012, the FDA approved Proscar for treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition affecting the muscles and bladder.

In addition to the mentioned benefits, the drug also has some potential side effects, which may include sexual dysfunction, decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, or a decrease in the number of erections per month. It is important to note that while the side effects of Finasteride are less commonly reported, there are reports of rare serious side effects that may occur.
